HOT = Higher Order Thinking.
Today we did something that I came up with that proved to be very successful. Back when they did their drawings of what happens to a balloon at three different temperatures. I picked out some interesting ones that had common misconceptions or mistakes, and some really good examples. I made copies of all of these, obscured the names and saved them. I can’t believe I was thinking that far ahead. Then, today, I got them into groups of three or four, and each group had three different drawings. They had to find the good, the bad, and the ugly in the drawings. Then they had to list what they would look for if they were grading the assignment, and draw an A+ version on the back.
I was surprised at how well it was working. I think I actually made up a “group worthy task” too. They were talking, arguing, reasoning, evaluating. I’m rather proud of both of us.
